As one of the most famous plastic surgery procedures, liposuction is often considered a general weight loss method. However, it is not a viable weight loss alternative. For patients who are overweight, a more effective solution to weight loss will be diet or exercise, or bariatric treatment such as gastric bypass surgery. Liposuction is a procedure that will effectively eliminate small, stubborn pockets of fat in patients who have a stable body weight. As an experienced expert in body contouring, Dr. Esmailian provides among the best liposuction in Orange County.
LIPOSUCTION BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS
Liposuction, otherwise known as lipo, is a great method of addressing pockets of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise. Treatment areas include:
- Calves and ankles
- Chest and back
- Hips and thighs
Occasionally, liposuction can be used for breast reduction.
The results of liposuction are typically permanent. The only exception is weight gain following the procedure. If your skin has good elasticity, it will mold to the new, slimmer contours of your body. Unfortunately this is not always the case, and the skin can become bunched or loose. Dr. Esmailian will thoroughly review all aspects of your anatomy before embarking upon liposuction in his Orange County office. In this way, an accurate outcome will be expected.
There are several types of liposuction, each one used for a slightly different purpose. Dr. Esmailian will discuss your options with you during your initial consultation.
As the most common form of liposuction, tumescent liposuction can effectively eliminate most fat deposits. Dr. Esmailian begins by injecting a sterile solution that causes affected blood vessels to contract, which minimizes blood loss during the procedure. This solution also causes the surrounding area to swell, making the fat more accessible. Dr. Esmailian then makes an incision and inserts a cannula under the skin. This cannula is connected to a vacuum, allowing Dr. Esmailian to remove fatty deposits in the treatment area.
ULTRASOUND-ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION (UAL)
Often used in conjunction with tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses a cannula that emits ultrasonic energy into the fat deposit. This serves to soften the fat cells, making for easier removal.
The cannula used in powered liposuction moves rapidly back and forth within the handle. This provides ease of removal when it comes to fat pockets that are tougher. Powered liposuction presents several advantages, such as fat removal with more precision and reduced pain and swelling.

ADDRESS STUBBORN FAT WITH LIPOSUCTION
After working hard through diet and exercise to drop a significant amount of weight, it is disheartening when those last few pounds just will not budge. Unfortunately, this happens because the fat cells in certain areas of the body resist shrinking no matter how much an individual diets and exercises. We are born with certain amount of fat cells in our body. Those fat cells just had to each grow bigger, we do not develop any more fat cells throughout our lives.

These procedures may commonly include such procedures as a Tummy Tuck, breast augmentation and breast reduction. In addition, some patients choose to have a facelift at the same time. However, liposuction is not limited to any cosmetic procedure. It is not uncommon to have one body part addressed, like in a tummy tuck but also perform liposuction of the arms or neck area or any other troubled area that one desires.
LIMITATIONS OF THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
Plastic surgery is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise routine; additionally, liposuction in Orange County is not used as a treatment for obesity. To have a successful result from liposculpting, it is always best to be at your stable weight and simply have difficulty shedding off that one particular area, no matter how much you exercise.
RESULTS OF A LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE – WHAT TO EXPECT
Each person’s outcome is different and is based on the amount of fat being removed and the areas being treated. Talking with Dr. Esmailian about what you would like to achieve at your initial consultation, is the best way to find out what any of the plastic surgery procedures he offers at his Orange County facility can accomplish for you.
THE INITIAL CONSULTATION FOR LIPOSUCTION IN ORANGE COUNTY
At your initial consultation, Dr. Esmailian will determine if you are a good candidate for a liposuction procedure. Generally, a good candidate is an individual of average or slightly above average weight that is in good health, but has specific areas of fat that are not responding well to diet and exercise. Overall, there are specific areas that the patient has difficulty with, like the hips or abdomen.
At your initial consultation, you should be prepared to talk about your personal medical history, any pertinent family medical history, as well as any medications, vitamins and herbal supplements you are currently taking. A liposuction procedure in Orange County may not just enhance your appearance, it may also boost your self-confidence.
PREPARING FOR YOUR LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
Prior to your procedure, you may need to have blood tests and/or provide a urine sample. The liposuction procedure in Orange County is usually performed as an outpatient surgery; therefore, you will need to bring a driver with you on the day Dr. Esmailian performs your procedure.
FOLLOWING LIPOSUCTION SURGERY
After your surgery, bandages are applied and then covered with a compression garment. This method keeps pressure on the areas of the body that were addressed during the liposuction procedure. This pressure helps to reduce bleeding and helps maintain the desired body shape, and prevent any fluid accumulation. You will need to wear the compression garment for 6 weeks. After this period, you may not choose to use the compression garment any longer and may resume full activity, including exercise.
THE RESULTS OF YOUR LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
You should expect some swelling, numbness, bruising and pain following your procedure; however, medications are available to help manage the discomfort. For several weeks following your liposuction procedure, you may also notice some tingling sensations. In general the final results are not apparent until approximately 4 months after the procedure.
The small incisions that are made during the liposuction procedure are closed with absorbable sutures, therefore there is no need to go through the discomfort of having sutures removed. There is tape that is placed over the incisions which may be removed at 2 weeks. Although you should begin walking as soon as possible after your liposuction surgery, you should avoid strenuous exercise for about 4 weeks. If the procedure was combined with a Tummy Tuck, then return to exercise is not until 6 weeks.
RECOVERING FROM YOUR LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
Most patient return to their work in 3-5 days. After a week or two, you will begin feeling better. While the majority of the swelling and bruising associated with your liposuction procedure will usually subside within a few weeks, you may still have some residual swelling up to several months later.
Within a few weeks, your new body shape will start to emerge. Approximately four to six weeks following your liposuction procedure, your full results should be evident. But it usually takes about 4-6 months from the date of your surgery before you notice the final result. By exercising regularly and eating healthy, you can maintain your new shape.
One common question that is often asked is if liposuction is done in one area and the patient gains weight later, does the fat go to a different area since there are less fat cells in the area that liposuction was performed? The short answer is no. If a patient gains weight after liposculpting, one would gain weight in the usual and normal areas that is typically gained before any procedure was done. There are still fat cells in the area that liposuction was performed, albeit less cells, but those cells that are there can still grow large if there is weight gain. Therefore, as mentioned earlier, it is best to try to maintain your weight by diet and exercise after such a procedure to help keep your new shape and results for a long time.
