Silicone Breast Implants
Cosmetic surgeries have put women on the same pedestal as Greek Goddesses, look-wise. While natural beauty has always been applauded, the results of a plastic surgery don’t go unappreciated either. Breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, these are some common surgeries that women undergo to enhance the appearance of their breasts. While undergoing a breast augmentation surgery, a common dilemma women face is, what implants to choose. Let us have a look at what silicone breast implants have to offer.
Silicone implants and their advantages
These implants are made of an exterior silicone shell which contains silicone gel. Usually, silicone implants come with three layers of shell, so as to prevent it from leakage. The additional layers give it a firmer feel when compared to other implants. What makes it a popular choice, is the fact that its texture and consistency match that of human fat, due to which, they feel way more natural than saline ones. Also, the likeliness of ripples or creases appearing under the breasts, is a lot lesser, when it comes to silicone implants. Silicone implants are especially suitable for women with lesser breast tissue. And in case the implant deflates, the silicone won’t get absorbed by the body unlike saline implants.
Another variation of silicone implants that is popular, is gummy bear implants. These implants have an edge over traditional implants as they maintain their form and structure, even when the shell is not present. So, in case, a rupture occurs, the implants won’t lose their shape. Dr. Farbod Esmailian, who caters to patients in Orange County, Newport Beach, Torrance, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, CA, says that, gummy bear implants have a much firmer texture feel than other implants. Also, they bring down the occurrence of wrinkling, which adds to its benefits.
Silicone implants surgical procedure
Silicone implants require for the surgeon to make incisions that are a tad bit longer than the ones needed for saline implants. The patient is administered general anesthesia before the surgery begins. The plastic surgeon starts out by making an incision in the breasts, under-arms, or around nipple area. The incision location depends on the implant size and the patient’s body. The surgeon then places the implant in the pocket, either above, or below the chest muscles, after which he stitches up the incision.
The breasts are covered in gauze after surgery. The doctor may ask you to wear a surgical compression garment, for the next few days. In case drainage tubes have been attached, they will be taken off in the next couple of days. You will be advised to stay off heavy duty lifting or exercise for about six weeks following surgery. In case you experience discomfort, the surgeon may provide pain-killers to deal with the pain. Although you will notice surgical scars and swelling in the operated area, it will reduce over time. Go in for an MRI after about three years from the time of the surgery, and for regular scans thereafter, about once in two years. This is to keep a tab on implants, in case it experiences a silent rupture.
