THE REASONS PATIENTS CHOOSE TO HAVE AREOLA AND NIPPLE REDUCTION SURGERY

A woman who has enlarged nipples may choose to have surgery to correct them. Furthermore, when a woman has extremely large breasts, becomes pregnant and/or breastfeeds it is not uncommon for her nipples and areolas to be negatively affected. Generally, the areolas stretch, sometimes reaching a circumference of 10 cm. Another issue common following pregnancy and breastfeeding is protruding nipples. However, some patients who may not have gone through pregnancy and breastfeeding may still have enlarged nipples, mainly due to genetics. Men can also experience puffy, over-sized nipples; therefore, Dr. Esmailian performs this surgery for men and women.

This procedure is used to improve the appearance of:

  • Elongated, over-sized and/or droopy nipples
  • Enlarged and/or bulging areolas

A NIPPLE AND AREOLA REDUCTION CAN BE PERFORMED WITH OTHER PROCEDURES

The areola reduction procedure can be performed alone; however, this is frequently done in conjunction with other breast surgeries including breast reductions and breast lifts. The procedure is an inherent part of breast reduction and mastopexy (breast lift), as the breast is lifted to a more youthful position, the areola is also reduced to be in harmony with the new breast shape and position.

Nipple reduction surgery can also be performed in conjunction with almost any other procedure that is performed, with minimal increase in downtime and discomfort.

NIPPLE AND AREOLA REDUCTION WITH DR ESMAILIAN IN ORANGE COUNTY

An areola reduction is an uncomplicated, simple procedure that does not take very long to complete; in addition, patients experience a relatively short downtime. Since Dr. Esmailian only removes the extra, peripheral areola, he leaves the nipple and the areola’s central portion attached.

The pigment rests within the superficial portion of the skin; therefore, removing a thin layer of skin is all that is necessary to accomplish an areola reduction. Once this excess skin is excised, Dr. Esmailian uses fine sutures to re-attach the areola that remains. The sutures are placed internally and will absorb over time, so there is no need for removal of sutures at a later date. Tape is placed over the incisions and patients may shower 2 days after the procedure. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and most patients return to work the following day. The resultant scar is placed between the normal skin and the pigmented skin of the areola in a circumferential fashion. The scar will go through a process of initially become red and erythematous but subsiding after 6 months times to a fine thin line along the border of the areola.

A nipple reduction surgery may also be performed under local anesthesia with minimal downtime as well. Two issues can be addressed with nipple reduction surgery: the nipple projection and/or the nipple width. Some patients have issues with one and not the other and some desire both the projection and the width to be addressed. This procedure is also performed with absorbable sutures preventing the need to have sutures removed in the office which may be uncomfortable. The resultant scars are minimal and very difficult to see over time.
