Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

Breast Augmentation Recovery Time Orange CountyBreast augmentation cosmetic surgery is a major procedure that will involve a few days of downtime. Patients should be prepared to allow time for recovery in order to achieve safe and effective outcomes.

Dr. Farbod Esmailian is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation surgery to patients in Orange County, Newport Beach, Torrance, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, CA, and other areas. He will advise the expected recovery period as well as recovery process to his patients during the initial consultation.

Immediate Recovery Period

The precise recovery time in case of breast augmentation may vary from one patient to another depending on various factors. The skills of the surgeon, the nature and extent of surgery performed and the patient’s natural healing ability will impact the total recovery time. Another important factor in recovery is how well the patient follows the surgeon’s instructions during the post-operative period.

The immediate recovery period in breast augmentation cosmetic surgery involves 24 to 48 hours. The patient should have someone to drive her back home after the surgeon decides that the patient is fit to leave for home. For the first 24 hours, preferably the patient should have someone to stay over at home for assistance. Following the first 24 to 48 hours, there will be an additional period of reduced activity for a few days.

In most cases, the patients will be ready to resume their regular daily activities or go back to work within a week to 10 days after the procedure. The sutures are usually removed after a week, and the plastic surgeon will examine the patient during that post-op visit to determine the progress in recovery. Dr. Esmailian will provide appropriate guidance to his patients in Orange County, Newport Beach, Torrance, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, CA, and other areas at this stage of recovery.

Recovery after a Week

Patients may be ready to drive on their own in about a week’s time. Normal movements and activities may be carried out because it only helps to promote healing when the patient maintains normal activity as far as possible. However, vigorous activity and strenuous exercises should be strictly avoided for at least four weeks. Some surgeons recommend that the patient’s heart rate should remain below 100 for the first two weeks.

This can help keep the blood pressure down and reduce the risk of bleeding in the breast pocket following the surgery. Bruising and swelling in the breasts will last for a few weeks, and start subsiding on its own after the first week. Normal activities during the first month will include the ability to lift objects of normal weight, raise hands over the head to wash hair, walk as well as drive.

The surgeon may recommend the patient to wear a surgical bra for support for a few weeks. Specific exercises of the arms as directed by the surgeon may be performed to expedite the recovery by stretching the pectoralis muscle. Full results of the breast augmentation surgery will appear gradually as the swelling and bruising resolves completely.
